Here's 40 Day Dream from the footage we shot on the last night of the 3 week Regent Theatre residency, edited by Edward Sharpe frontman Alex Ebert. There are few bands anywhere today that bring out energy at live shows like this band. I can only imagine what Abbot Kinney Blvd will look like this Sunday when they take the Little Radio stage. Outdoor street revival? You better believe!

Flashback Friday

The Kinks, Dead End Street

The Kinks album, Face to Face, released 1966 on Pye Records in the United Kingdom and on Reprise Records in the United States, was out of print for many years. Re-issues since 1998 have included
bonus tracks of songs released contemporaneously as singles (most
notably "Dead End Street") and two unreleased tracks.

A major artistic breakthrough for Kinks' songwriter Ray Davies, the LP represents the first full flowering of Davies' use of narrative, observation, and wry social commentary in his songs. It heralded The Kinks' move away from the hard-driving rock and roll style of 1964-65, which had catapulted the group to international stardom. It was the first Kinks album consisting entirely of Ray Davies compositions, and was their first album recorded over several months, rather than in one concentrated session.

Davies, who had suffered a nervous breakdown just prior to the major recording sessions for the album, seemed to be responding to the overwhelming pressures on him by escaping into stories of the bittersweet existence of ordinary suburban people, their failings, and frustrations. The new style of writing began gradually the previous year with compositions such as "A Well Respected Man" and "Dedicated Follower of Fashion", and came to full fruition in May 1966 with the hit single "Sunny Afternoon", which reached Number 1 in the UK.

The album was released in a particularly tumultuous year for the band, with personnel problems (bassist Pete Quaife was injured, resigned, and later rejoined the band), legal and contractual battles, and an ongoing hectic touring schedule. The album was critically well received, but did not sell particularly well at the time of its release.

LYRICS:

There's a crack up in the ceiling,
And the kitchen sink is leaking.
Out of work and got no money,
A Sunday joint of bread and honey.

What are we living for?
Two-roomed apartment on the second floor.
No money coming in,
The rent collector's knocking, trying to get in.

We are strictly second class,
We don't understand,
(Dead end!)
Why we should be on dead end street.
(Dead end!)
People are living on dead end street.
(Dead end!)
Gonna die on dead end street.

Dead end street (yeah)
Dead end street (yeah)

On a cold and frosty morning,
Wipe my eyes and stop me yawning.
And my feet are nearly frozen,
Boil the tea and put some toast on.

What are we living for?
Two-roomed apartment on the second floor.
No chance to emigrate,
I'm deep in debt and now it's much too late.

We both want to work so hard,
We can't get the chance,
(Dead end!)
People live on dead end street.
(Dead end!)
People are dying on dead end street.
(Dead end!)
Gonna die on dead end street.

Dead end street (yeah)
Dead end street (yeah)

(Dead end!)
People live on dead end street.
(Dead end!)
People are dying on dead end street.
(Dead end!)
Gonna die on dead end street.

Dead end street (yeah)
Dead end street (yeah)
Dead end street (yeah)
Head to my feet (yeah)
Dead end street (yeah)
Dead end street (yeah)
Dead end street (yeah)
How's it feel?

Nico, I'm not saying

This version of the Gordon Lightfoot song, I'm Not Saying, is unique in that it is said to feature both then lover Brian Jones and session player Jimmy Page on guitar. It wasn't Nico's favorite track but it was a start for her post modeling turned singing career. She claimed that producer Andrew Loog Oldham (also The Rolling Stones manager) was trying to make her sound like another Marianne Faithfull for this track on his own Immediate label. Nico appeared on Ready, Steady, Go, British TV's Friday night mod-scene showcase performing this song. The flip, The Last Mile, is not as strong but still is quite charming. This is the single that Andy Warhol brought into The Factory to play
for everyone proclaiming he would be bringing her in to meet the Velvet
Underground.

This
is a your weekly, weekend soundtrack series on Saturday (sndtrksat)
and Sunday (sndtrksun), in the form of free mp3 downloads. After download, these songs
can be recorded to cassette and taken everywhere you go to be played at barbeques, pool parties or bridge games.

This week includes five bands that have been regular rotation on both the radio station and my headphones. All five songs are perfect for the soundtrack to your afternoon in the sun or drives to wherever your going. Enjoy and have a great day.

AA Bondy

AA Bondy is led by Scott Bondy, the former lead singer of Birmingham, AL’s Southern grunge darlings Verbena. American Hearts is stripped-down indie folk, that was recorded and mixed at a barn near his home the
Catskills of upstate New York. The result is a record that is
consistently amazing from start to finish. I seriously need someone to
come and take this album away from me because it might just be the only
way it gets a break. Check dates for a limited US tour during June.

Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros

A 12 piece outfit from Los Angeles fronted by Alex Ebert of Ima Robot,
the band was one of the "super buzz" bands at SXSW this past year. We
teamed up with Edward Sharpe for a 3 week residency to kick off the
Regent Theater in downtown LA. With only two songs available anywhere,
the band drew 700-900 each week for what can only be described as part
musical extravaganza and part tent revival. The new EP is available on
iTunes and is highly recommended. Small West coast tour and European
dates currently. Look for a big opening tour soon. See them live if you
have the chance, because few bands put on shows this fun and energetic.

Dawes

As
I fill in "Unsigned" for Dawes' record label, I can't help but think how
short lived that should be. This band is one of my favorite
examples of good American rock and roll in Los Angeles and made up of
four great dudes. Every time they play a Little Radio event, I get new
people telling me how awesome they are. With hints of 70's greats,
these guys drive home the kind of music that would keep you company on a cross country drive. On tour with Deer Tick all summer and playing with us at the Regent this Thursday for Artwalk. Check the site Monday for set time.

John Joseph McCauley III's creation that was originally
from Providence, Rhode Island. The band started as a two-piece
(guitar/drum) and grew to include upright bass and an additional
guitar. Deer Tick's sound has been described as everything from "Alt-Country"
to "Freak-Folk", but is more simply a great band with rock, folk and country elements. They were another band at SXSW people were putting extra
effort into seeing. Their live shows match and even surpass their
studio recordings that, themselves, are full of life. Look for them on
tour across the US (with Dawes) starting in about a week.

For fans of 90's great Archers of Loaf from Chapel Hill, Eric Bachmann's Denver based Crooked Fingers need no
introduction.
Following the breakup of Archers back in 1998, Eric began work with CF
as a solo project that grew over the years. For me, the latest records
by far my favorite, sharing all the guitar and vocal qualities that
made Archers a favorite. Fun and all around great rock music. Not much
in the way of touring besides about 5 dates right now. I'm personally
trying to get them out to LA for an event soon.

In the past there have been people that have had trouble streaming the radio station because of firewalls and such. That is now sorted, as we've added a whole new setup that makes the stream available to everyone. We will have the new links plugged into the site shortly. In the meantime, here's all you need to know:
