White Denim: "Mess Your Hair Up"
There weren't many "buzz bands" whatsoever during SXSW this year. But White Denim were one of the acts that left a lasting impression with their enigmatic and skilled rock performances.
Rilo Kiley: "Silver Lining (stream!)"
Brand new track from Under the Blacklight!
Slowdive: "Some Velvet Morning"
In my opinion this cover version is the strongest. Only Slowdive could take a dark composition like "Some Velvet Morning" and make it creepier, even more atmospheric than the original.
Lee Hazelwood & Nancy Sinatra: "Some Velvet Morning"
The classic duet from the late Lee Hazelwood and her greatness Nancy Sinatra. The contrasting interplay between the dark echoes of Hazelwood and the dizzy carnival of Sinatra's voice is haunting yet serene.
Sunset Rubdown: "Up on Your Leopard, Upon the End of Your Feral Days"
The first downloadable track courtesy of Jagjaguwar. It comes from Sunset Rubdown's Random Spirit Lover, which drops October 9th.
Bishop Allen: "Ring of Fire (live)"
Yep. It's the Johnny Cash classic penned live by Bishop Allen.
This is the best song I've heard so far from Kala, though I've yet to get my hands on a copy of the full-length. M.I.A. dropped by KCRW to play a few tunes and discuss how she was denied into the USA.
The idea that Sleater-Kinneypretty much sucks. Luckily, I sumbled upon Santa Cruz's The Good Grief via Skatterbrian. After several listens this trio sounds pretty darn close to lots of other bands that came out of Olympia, WA. back in the early nineties.
Bat For Lashes have been all the rave this week in Los Angeles after their much talked about Spaceland performance. This track is probably my favorite. It's got all the elements; creepiness, subtlety, atmosphere…
Pela: "Holiday Song (Pixies cover-live)"
Yep, it's a Pixies cover, and a damn fine one. The word has been out about Pela's awesome live sets, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't pick their album.
It's not often that you'll get an email from a band you've never heard of and it turns out to be this good. Monarch hail from Baltimore and will release their debut album If Children on August 21st via Morphius.
Baltimore's Celebration are back with a new album titled The Modern Tribe. This is their second full-length, produced by TVOTR's Dave Sitek, and is due October 9th on 4AD.
"Kokomo" is from Load Blown. It's the fourth album by Brooklyn’s Black Dice, their first for the Animal Collective's label Paw Tracks.
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart: "Orchard of my Eye"
This long named NYC band simply reminded me of Ecstasy & Wine-era MBV. Heavy on the jangle but still driving where it needs to be. You can order their debut EP here.
Bellavista: "Temptation by your Side"
About a year ago I stumbled upon this San Francisco band because a friend had mentioned to me that they sounded like Further. Bellavista don't really sound like Further at all, but they certainly are good and definitely more psych-driven.
A free download courtesy of VICE. "Cold Hands" is a simple jingle with a jangle..and some wicked surf guitar noodling. This track comes from their forthcoming album Good Bad Not Evil, out Sept 11th.
Supergrass: "Diamond Hoo Ha Man (live)"
A new Supergrass track recorded live at the Guilford Festival. It sounds very White Stripes on the guitars until Danny comes in on the drums.
The Most Serene Republic: "Sherry and her Butterfly Net"
Brand new track from The Most Serene Repulic's new album Population, coming October 2nd on Arts & Crafts. Another great single reminiscent of Broken Social Scene and Death Cab For Cutie.
Bottom of the Hudson: "Bee Hive"
The age of Joy Division and Talking Heads impersonators is coming to an end. Welcome the new Andy Partridge of XTC (not really) meets Ride via Bottom of the Hudson. This song is pretty darn good.
From Cass' new album, Dropping the Writ, coming October 9th via Domino. He's at the Fonda tonight opening for Peter Bjorn & John, get there early.
These days, any CD with a label slapped on the back that reads from the family of Secretly Canadian/Jagjaguwar/Dead Oceans, I'm buying it. This track is taken from Marmoset's latest album Florist Fired.
Black Moth Super Rainbow: "Jump into my Mouth and Breathe the Stardust"
BMSR's Dandelion Gum is an aural pleasure for people who like their trippy sprinkled with sugar. Look for the band on a massive North American tour with Aesop Rock this fall.
Thee More Shallows: "Fly Paper"
One of the more underrated albums of the year. Thee More Shallows remind me of Bailter Space and sometimes Caribou, although they're more "out there" and experimental. This song is gooooood.
Somewhere within the sounds of the Wedding Present and Shapes & Sizes lies this new song from Montreal's Magic Weapon. Their new 6-song EP will be available in October.
Yo La Tengo: "Theme from The Simpsons"
A quick 42 seconds of Yo La Tengo's take on The Simpson's theme song. Homer interjects with lyrics from Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl."
"...I married Flanders."
1990s: "You're Supposed To Be My Friend"
1990s bring out the Rolling Stones, Franz Ferdinand and a little glam on their debut Cookies. The band comes to the Troubadour next month.
Fucked Up: "Stress (Justice cover)"
Fucked Up turn an anxious two-note party jam into a heavy, dense hammer of guitars and bass.
Kinski: "Punching Goodbye Out Front"
The once voice-less Kinski return on August 21st with their new album Down Below It’s Chaos (Sub Pop). Ths track, and a few others on the album, feature vocals by guitarist Chris Martin.
Go on over to the band's MySpace page and tell their profile photo doesn't look like a promo for NBC's Will & Grace. This is another brand new Imperial Teen jam taken from The Hair, the TV, the Baby & the Band due August 21st on Merge Records.
New Young Pony Club: "Ice Cream (Popular Computer Remix)"
A popular remix for a very popular song. New Young Pony Club are getting some seriously good reviews for their new album Fantastic Playroom. Fans will have to wait until the August 28th release date.
Super Furry Animals: "Run Away"
Brand new Super Furries track from their forthcoming album Hey Venus!
From their new Autumntone re-release of Shadows Rise. You can catch Travel by Sea on August 7th at the Silverlake Lounge.
Kyp Malone (TVOTR): "Playhouses"
Kyp Malone plays TV on the Radio's "Playhouse" in a live acoustic setting for Ma Fama blog.
Chicago's Plane just released I See Love in the Future. For fans of The Movies.
