Venice Beach, right off Abbot Kinney Blvd, has been home to me for over 10 years now. It's the pocket of Los Angeles I've chosen to settle into that has an amazing history, great people/food and a small community vibe. There's always a good feeling for me when I pass under the shadows of the 405, barreling west on the 10 freeway as the temprature drops and the smell of the beach fills the my old truck. I didn't leave Texas 18 years ago to live somewhere hot. It's the beach for me.
One night during Artwalk, Brian (owner of Milkmade, great store on AK located in the old Firefly space) asked me on behalf of the AKF Board to curate a Little Radio stage. Street stage? I pick the bands? Down the street from my house?! uh...okay!
I've attended the Abbot Kinney Festival every September since moving to Venice. The festival began in 1984, as an annual community event to celebrate the tradition of Venice as a unique and diverse community and to pay homage to its founder, Abbot Kinney. In it's 25th year, the festival draws locals along with people from all over LA to check out the local shops along with a good mile worth booths that line both sides of the street and the weather is..well...Venice Beach! Oh yea..did I mention it's FREE, OPEN TO THE PUBLIC & ALL AGES!
So here's the lineup (with free mp3 downloads) for the Little Radio stage at the 2009 Abbot Kinney Festival on September 27 from 10am-6pm. I'll also be posting MTA bus schedules and routes to get you here.
