To understand Songs in A&E, the latest release
from Spiritualized, a little background info is needed. If at first
listen the album feels dangerously menacing, then it might help to know
that front man, Jason Pierce, was battling a near death experience in
2005, and that 'a&e' stands for "Accident and Emergency"
(the hospital ward where he was battling from). It sets the pace, however
most of the songs were born before the incident. And yet, looking back
there is an eerie oracular nature to them. It's spooky, and with the
electronic subtleties interspersed through many soulful (oh there is much choir action going on here) songs, the mix hints at sitting
quietly in a communal hospital room.
